Every day people are having conversations online. Forming around passions and interests, millions of blogs and hundreds of social networks, message boards and media-sharing sites are discussing a vast array of subjects.

Facebook is adding more than 100,000 users a day and already has 2.7 million active users, with more than half of those returning daily. MySpace is considerably larger, with 6.8 million users in the UK alone.

This is a classic example of consumers who are taking control of how, what and where they access their content creating, compiling and customizing their experiences.

Whichever way you look at it, social media is now a mainstream phenomenon.

It’s time we started reaching this audience in new ways, ways that excite and involve them – more so than ever before.

From blogs and message boards to video sharing (youtube) and picture sharing (Photobucket), social media sites allow consumers to add their own content and contact new people.

Microblogging via sites like Twitter are becoming increasingly popular – where it’s possible to actively get involved by shaping the conversation and find out what people are saying about your brand.
